Jesus Is The One

Let's open up God's word today as we continue in our series.

There is more journeying through the book of Acts.

If you are new to our church today, welcome to the journey.

We are going through a book of the Bible in the New Testament called the book of Acts.

And we're going verse by verse and chapter by chapter.

We're having an absolute blast.

At least I am.

I hope the rest of the church is as well.

I got a question for you.

I want you to imagine something with me.

Imagine stepping into a packed stadium of 50,000 people.

They're all shouting.

They're moving around.

They're waving banners.

And you are told that there is someone somewhere in the middle of that massive, swirling ocean of humanity is one person who holds the key to your best future life.

There's a catch though, every single person in the stadium is wearing something bright.

Thousands of people are wearing red striped shirts, some hundreds are wearing the similar glasses, but they're all screaming for your attention, claiming to be the one you're looking for.

Five minutes goes by and you are absolutely getting exhausted.

10 minutes and you're thinking of giving up.

Frustration begins to set in and here's what's happening.

It's exact exhaustion of the Where's Waldo generation.

Anybody remember Where's Waldo?

But more importantly, it's the exact exhaustion of the culture of today.

We wake up every morning, we step into a spiritual stadium, our culture is crowded and it's a chaotic mess.

And there's a thousand different voices that are vying for our attention saying, look here, follow me.

This is truth, this is God.

We're surrounded by lookalikes, philosophies, modern deities, the God of self, the God of money, the God of comfort, the God of political power, and they're all wearing something that looks good and they all promise to save us.

And it's easy to look at the spiritual chaos of our world and say, all religions must be the same.

All gods lead to the same place and it's impossible to find the real God anyway.

But today, we're gonna look past the crowd because in the middle of the world that believes there's many gods, there is one who stands out completely distinct from all the others.

And if you know what to look for, you can spot him.

You can spot him in the midst of a chaotic culture.

And once you find him, the rest of the crowd fades into the background.

Today's text is going to shine Jesus in a way that it will help us see him in the midst of a where's Waldo generation and understand the message every Christian is supposed to understand and to see clearly.

Here's my question.

Do you know who you're looking for?

Do you know what you believe?

Do you know if someone told you or they asked you about your faith, do you know what you should tell them?

What is it that you believe about God?

Who

Is he?

What is in the text today is going to tell us, exactly outline us, the message of Christianity and what every Christian should believe.

Let's open up the text, Acts chapter 10.

Let's stand up together.

for the reading of God's word and honoring the word of the Lord.

Acts chapter 10 starting in verse 24.

They arrived in Caesarea the following day.

Cornelius was waiting for them and had called together his relatives and close friends.

As Peter entered his home, Cornelius fell at his feet and worshiped him.

But Peter pulled him up and said, stand up, I'm a human being just like you.

So they talked together and went inside, where many others were assembled.

Peter told them, you know it's against our laws for a Jewish man to enter a Gentile home like this or to associate with you.

But God has shown me that I should no longer think of anyone as impure or unclean.

So I came without objection as soon as I was sent for.

Now tell me, why you sent for me?

Cornelius replied, four days ago, I was praying in my house about this same time, three o'clock in the afternoon.

Suddenly, a man in dazzling clothes.

Some of you look like you got some dazzling clothes.

Am I a man with a dazzling clothes today?

I don't know.

It's a new shirt from my wife.

Anyway, a man in dazzling clothes was standing in front of me.

He told me, Cornelius,

Your prayer's been heard and your gifts to the poor have been noticed by God.

Now send messengers to Joppa and summon a man named Simon Peter.

He's staying in the home of Simon of Tanner who lives near the seashore.

This is the coolest stuff.

I love this book.

Are you guys loving this?

So I sent for you at once and it was good for you to come.

Now we're all here waiting before God

to hear the message the Lord has given you.

Then Peter replied, I see very clearly that God shows no favoritism.

In every nation he accepts those who fear him and do what is right.

This is the message.

Here it is.

This is the message of good news for the people of Israel, that there is peace with God through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

You know what happened throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after John began preaching his message of baptism.

And you know that God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power.

Then Jesus went around doing good.

Are you starting to notice what I'm highlighting?

Then Jesus went around doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil.

For God was with, I should have highlighted him because it's another reference to Jesus.

Missed that one.

And we apostles are witnesses of all he did throughout Judea and Jerusalem.

They put him, Jesus, to death by hanging Jesus on a cross.

But God, I missed another one, but God raised Jesus to life on the third day.

Then God allowed Jesus to appear, not to the general public, but to us whom God had chosen in advance to be his witnesses.

We were those who ate and drank with Jesus after Jesus rose from the dead.

And Jesus ordered us to preach everywhere and to testify that Jesus is the one.

Appointed by God to be the judge of all, the living and the dead.

Jesus is the one.

All the prophets testified about.

saying that everyone who believes in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through Jesus' name.

Title of the message, Jesus is the One.

You may be seated.

What is the most anticipated, excited atmosphere you have ever been in in your life?

Rock concert?

early Christmas morning when you were a kid.

I don't know what the most exciting, anticipated day of your life has ever been, but I promise you, the meeting in Cornelius' home was one of the most anticipated, exciting, hungry crowd of listeners recorded in the New Testament.

Because Cornelius has had an angel tell him a specific name of an apostle who he didn't know, told him who he was staying with, told him where he lived, and said, he is gonna tell you how you and your entire household can be saved.

Can you imagine the excitement and the anticipation that was happening inside this house?

This house is absolutely packed with hungry listeners.

This is what it says.

It says, I sent for you at once and it was good for you to come.

Now we are all here waiting before God to hear the message.

Think about it, they're leaning in, they're hungry to hear what God is about to say.

Hey, what if you came to church actually expecting God to speak to you?

Not just Lord, please let the Sherman be shorter than the parking lot situation.

But an actual hunger.

What if you didn't just come to sing three songs and hear a sermon and get home before lunch?

What if you came saying, God,

Speak to me today.

I'm waiting before you.

Speak to me.

Correct me.

Challenge me.

Encourage me.

Show me Jesus.

Listen, church, hunger changes the way you listen.

Hunger does.

Hunger changes.

There's a guy, there's plenty of people in the Bible that are recorded for us that show us the type of hunger that Cornelius had.

Cornelius had a hunger.

He packed his house because he had a supernatural encounter and he's like,

Peter's going to tell us the message of the gospel of how we can be saved.

Everybody's in there leaning in on the edge of their seat with every word.

Go talk to us.

Come on, Peter.

Come on.

Let's finish with all the introductions.

Just get to the message.

Tell us.

We're done with announcements.

Get to the word of God.

And there's plenty of people in the Bible that show us this kind of hunger, but not just show us the hunger.

It shows us what God does in response to hunger.

Anybody ever remember hearing about or reading about a guy in the gospels by the name of Zacchaeus?

Zacchaeus was hungry.

He was curious.

He heard Jesus was coming to town.

He was a tax collector.

He's like, Jesus is on his way.

But he was challenged with his height.

And so he climbed a tree.

He did whatever he could do to get to a place where he could see Jesus when Jesus was gonna pass by.

Guess what heaven did?

Showed up at his house.

Heaven showed up at a guy's house who was willing to do whatever it took to get a clearer view of Jesus.

There's a lady by the name of Mary.

She had a sister by the name of Martha.

You might have heard of her.

Mary, it says, sat at Jesus' feet.

Guess what Jesus did when he came to Jerusalem, on his way to Jerusalem, going through Bethany a lot?

Guess what he did?

He would go around the side of the mountain and he would stay at Mary's house.

Why?

Because Mary was hungry to hear the words of life from Jesus.

There are times that my hunger for God

have been so strong anticipating this upcoming meeting that there was nothing that was gonna distract me from showing up to that meeting.

I don't know what it was.

There was this supernatural thing that was going on inside of me that knew that, dear God, I gotta be

in that prayer meeting.

I gotta be in that revival meeting.

How about next weekend and every weekend for that matter?

We would begin to challenge ourselves and say, I wanna be like Cornelius.

I wanna be like Cornelius' household.

And I wanna have a hunger that draws heaven's attention and says, come on, God, I wanna hear what you wanna say to me, no matter what it is.

And then when you have that kind of hunger, the Holy Spirit gets poured out in such a way like you have never experienced in all of your life.

Can I hear an amen to that?

All right, that was a baby amen, but oh well, whatever.

Here we go.

Let's go through the message.

Let's go through what is it that should stand out in the midst of a chaotic, confused culture about every road leads to heaven.

There's no way to know who's God or what religion is right in the middle of that.

that happened 2,000 years ago, the same thing happening now, God sends an apostle by the name of Peter and cuts through the confusion, cuts through in the middle of the Waldo generation and says, this is the message every Christian should know.

Y'all ready to dig into it?

Let's go for it.

Look at this, Acts 10 verse 34.

Peter replied, I see very clearly, God shows no favoritism

Every nation, in every nation, he accepts those who fear him and do what's right.

Here it is.

First thought I want us to understand from this scripture is this, God can save anyone.

God can save anyone.

Now, I don't know if this is encouraging or not to Cornelius' household and his congregation.

It's as if Peter's saying, dear God, God can even save you.

Tell your neighbor, God can even save you.

Will you tell him?

God can even save you.

Look him right back and say, I think he might be able to save you too.

Ha!

This, this is important.

Listen, this is important, church.

This is the very first foundational truth every Christian must understand.

God can save anybody.

There is not a human being alive that you will ever look in the eye that God does not love and that God does not desire to save.

Cornelius was already praying.

Cornelius was already giving.

Cornelius was already seeking God.

Cornelius was a good man by human standards, and God still sent Peter.

Why?

Because being sincere isn't enough.

Being moral isn't enough.

Culture would say they're a good person.

If anybody deserves to get to heaven, they do.

Being religious isn't enough.

Cornelius needed Jesus, and so do we.

The worst sinner needs Jesus, and everybody agrees to that.

But the best person in the room needs Jesus.

Man, I look around this room and I go, there are some great people here.

My wife, one of the best persons in the room.

My mother is in the room.

I mean, dear Lord.

My mom, my mother-in-law.

I could just start pointing out.

And just, Pastor Lon, dear Lord.

He's like, Teresa, his wife, she will have the best lawn in heaven.

Yes.

She will because she mowed mine so many times.

When we would leave on vacation, I'd come home, and it would just be mowed through her arthritis pain.

I'm telling you, when I get up there, that'll be my job.

What are you doing?

Mowing Teresa's yard today.

It's payback time for eternity.

But the best person in the room needs Jesus.

Right?

Everybody needs Jesus.

And Peter, he says, I see clearly now.

I see it clearly now.

He became so convinced of this truth, he wrote his own book in the Bible, inspired by the Holy Spirit, saying God does not want anyone to be destroyed, but he wants everyone to repent.

Now I realize there are a lot of different needs in this room and in Pendleton Department of Corrections.

I know there's a lot of different needs.

But I don't have to be prophetic to accurately declare I know the greatest need of every person in the sound of my voice right now.

Some of you are thinking, oh, you do?

It's for my marriage to get fixed, or it's for my diagnosis to change, or for my child to stop making stupid decisions, which would be an amazing miracle.

That would be awesome.

And these are all legitimate and significant needs that I am confident God is listening to your prayers and wants to be the answer to.

But the greatest need of every person in the sound of my voice right now is to be saved.

That is the greatest need of all humanity.

In fact, the Bible says Jesus told us you must be born again.

He didn't say you must know what 666 stands for.

He didn't say your sermons should not be boring, even though I think that's in the original manuscript somewhere.

He didn't say these must things.

He did say you must be born again.

Salvation is the greatest need of every human being.

And Peter said he saw very clearly that God shows no favoritism.

Nobody is excluded from the invitation.

Thank God this is the message.

Come on, church, thank God.

Even you and I can be saved.

Now, who's the farthest person from God you know right now?

Do not turn to your right or left.

Don't say their name out loud.

Don't do it.

There's a man we're gonna learn more about in the upcoming chapters of the book of Acts that is so far from God, but he came the most radical Christian of us all.

You do not know anyone who is too far gone for Jesus to reach.

Jesus told three stories in the book of Luke, who is the author of this book of Acts.

Well, actually he told it in the Gospel of John, but he told three stories, lost coin, lost sheep, and lost, anybody know what the other one was?

A lost son.

A lost son.

Each one of them building on the other, saying about God's heart to recover that which is lost.

This lost son takes his father's inheritance.

Actually, it is in the Gospel of Luke.

Sorry.

Back to Luke.

He takes the father's inheritance early, goes and spends it.

Prodigal means wasteful.

He spends it on wasteful living.

And he spends all this on wasteful living, and then he comes to a census, and he goes...

What am I doing?

I'm so far from God.

And this is what the text records for us.

Look at this.

While he was still, look at this, a long way off.

Say a long way off.

A long way off.

His father saw him.

He saw him.

While he was way out there, look at this, filled with love and compassion, what did God do?

He ran.

He ran.

Don't confuse how far someone has run from God with how far God is willing to go to reach them.

God can save anybody.

Peter's like, I see clearly now.

Don't measure the reach of God's grace by the distance of someone's rebellion.

Don't give up on your prodigal.

Don't give up on your son.

Don't give up on your daughter.

Don't give up on your mom.

Don't give up on your dad.

Don't give up on your husband.

Don't give up on your wife.

Don't give up on your boss.

Don't give up on your neighbor.

Don't give up on your coworker.

Don't give up on the addict.

Don't give up on the atheist.

Don't give up on the person who says they'll never come to church.

Don't give up on the person who says they don't believe in God and never will.

Don't give up on yourself.

There is no human being outside the reach of Jesus.

God can save anyone because Jesus is the one.

Jesus is the one.

Peter goes on.

Look at this.

This is the message.

This is the message of good news for the people of Israel that there's peace with God through Jesus.

This isn't his last name, by the way.

Christ means the Messiah, the anointed one.

Jesus, the Messiah, who is Lord of all.

Here's the message every Christian needs to believe, understand about Christianity.

God can save anyone, and Jesus is Lord.

Have you ever noticed that culture does not mind people mentioning God or praying to God?

But the hair gets up on the back of people's necks in culture when you pray in Jesus' name.

Amen.

or declare Jesus is God.

There becomes a reaction.

Jesus is resisted by the devil and the world system.

That's why the Bible says there is an anti-Christ.

He is against Christ.

Mention God and everyone stays neutral.

Preach Jesus and the world wants to silence and kill you.

Ha, Peter makes it clear that to get right with God

can only come through Jesus, the Messiah, who is Lord of all.

Our culture says there's many paths, many truths, many gods, and you get to choose whichever one works for you.

Peter walks into Cornelius' home,

Packed crowd, family and friends, leaning over on the edge of their couch, edge of their seats, and sitting on the floor and just going, tell us more.

And they're leaning in and he doesn't give them a menu of spiritual options.

He tells them about Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all.

Jesus is God and there is no getting into heaven without him.

And Jesus himself said something very similar.

Jesus told him, I'm the way, I'm the truth, and the life.

No one can come to the Father except through me.

Jesus, that sounds so narrow-minded.

Well, Jesus said the way to heaven is narrow.

and few find it.

The gospel is centered on Jesus, who he is and what he did.

Jesus came to save us from our sin and to restore us to God.

I am having fun preaching the Bible.

That's it.

Again, again, imagine the anticipation.

Four days.

As went by, Cornelius saw an angel dazzling close.

He's like, spoke to me, told me about a guy I didn't know, told me where he lived, told me the guy he was living with and said, he's gonna tell you how you and your entire household can get saved.

He tells everybody.

Get to my house.

It's going to be revival nights.

Saturday, 6 p.m.

You don't want to be late.

They're all in there just waiting with anticipation.

And they're all sitting on the edge of their seat.

God can save anybody, even people like you.

What good news?

Kind of discouraged, but still kind of encouraged as well.

This is great.

So who's God?

Jesus.

this man by the name of Jesus, Jesus is the Messiah, and he died, and he paid the price for our sins.

Tell us more.

Jesus is Lord because Jesus is the one.

Now, if Jesus is Lord, then Jesus doesn't get to merely tell

one option.

He's not to be merely one option among many.

He's one among all.

He's like, I'm Lord of them all.

There is no other God besides me.

Okay.

Then if he saves us, there's one other thing you need to understand.

He also, look at this.

He ordered us to preach.

This is what Jesus, the one I'm telling you about, he ordered us, commanded us, preach everywhere.

and to testify that Jesus is the one appointed by God to be the judge.

Oh, this doesn't get a lot of hand claps and likes, and this is the part of the message that you're all gonna squirm.

You'll be the judge of all, the living and the dead.

Here's part of the Christian message every Christian must believe and must understand.

Everyone will be judged.

Everyone will stand before Jesus.

Whether you believed in Jesus or not, you will someday.

Did you know that?

Everyone will become a believer.

But not everyone will be saved.

Everyone will be judged.

Everyone will stand before Jesus, whether you believed it or not.

And if there's going to be a test, listen, I wanna know the questions to the test ahead of time.

But more importantly, I wanna know the answers to the test.

Some of us have spent our whole lives preparing for questions that don't matter, that nobody's gonna ask.

What's your GPA?

Nobody's ever asked me my GPA since college 30 years ago.

Nobody ever.

How much money did you make?

What kind of car did you drive?

How many followers did you have?

Do you have a six pack?

And some of you are like, yeah, in the refrigerator.

You know, it's like...

Did you finally get that kitchen remodeled done?

No, when we stand before Jesus, he's not gonna ask us, did you have the nicest house on the block?

Did you have the nicest yard?

Unless it's Teresa.

He's not gonna ask us how many people liked our Instagram post.

He's not gonna ask us this.

He's not gonna ask us how many square feet our house was.

He's not gonna ask us any of those things.

He's not gonna ask us if we had the perfect sourdough recipe.

That's not what the Lord's gonna ask us.

Everyone great and small.

whether they believed in Jesus or not, will stand before him.

And all of a sudden, everything that seemed big in this life will suddenly become very small.

He's gonna ask us, what did you do with Jesus?

What did you do with Jesus?

All that will matter is that your name is written in the book of life.

That's all that matters.

The message Peter and the apostles preached was there's going to be a judgment day someday.

Believers should not fear that day, but neither should they treat it lightly.

We will give an account with what we did with our lives and what we believed about Jesus.

Now, not to get too far ahead in the book of Acts, because it's easy to do.

But there's this guy, Paul the Apostle, that's gonna become a major figure in the book.

And he shares the gospel with people.

And when he does, he talks about standing before God someday as part of his gospel message.

Look at this.

As he reasoned with them about righteousness, self-control, and what is this?

The coming day of judgment.

Felix, this Roman official, became frightened.

Go away.

Go away.

Silence you.

Go away for now.

He replied, when it's more convenient, I'll call for you again.

Paul is standing before a very powerful government official named Felix.

And Paul could have talked about politics.

He could have talked about Rome.

He could have talked about trying to impress him, try to get on his good side.

Instead, Paul talks to him about righteousness, self-control, and the coming judgment.

And Felix freaks out.

Why?

Because suddenly, eternity became more real than his position in life.

We don't like talking about judgment because judgment forces us to think beyond this life.

It forces us to think eternally.

And if we're gonna live the life that we were made for, we have to think eternally now.

Amen.

Now, the topic of judgment doesn't get a lot of likes, it doesn't get a lot of reels made on social media.

Judgment doesn't exactly make the algorithm happy.

Coming soon, the coming judgment.

Probably not getting a lot of shares.

But it made it into the New Testament, check this out, well over 100 times.

100 times.

Why?

Because Jesus is the one appointed as judge.

This is part of the gospel message.

How does that work into my everyday life?

Help people think beyond this life.

What do you think about the afterlife?

What do you think's beyond here?

Because God says this, he's placed eternity in the heart of everyone.

And if people just say, ah, we die, we're just like animals, we're dead, and we go to the, you don't really believe that.

Oh, yes, I do.

No, something's inside your heart that says there's something beyond this life, and you know it.

And that's what a part of the gospel, y'all enjoying this?

I know you're not really, but it's okay.

It's what you need to believe.

Look at this.

We're not done, so buckle up.

Here we go.

He is the one all the prophets testified about, saying that everyone who what?

Believes in Jesus.

Everyone who believes in Jesus will have their sins forgiven through his name.

Dear God, this is part of the message they're leaning into listening on.

Cornelius and the whole crowd tells them, believe in him.

believe in Jesus.

Cornelius and his whole crew believed in God.

And that's where many in our culture are today.

But they just didn't know about Jesus.

And in order to be saved, they needed to hear his name.

I think I wanna repent on behalf of

of the American gospel preachers for a moment, of which I've fallen into at times, where we've turned the message of the gospel into you and I having a better life today.

And we've stopped talking about eternity and judgment day and repentance and holiness, righteousness, self-control, and more about

getting all of the things in this life that we consider to be the most important fixed.

Peter shows up and goes, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, Jesus.

It's all about Jesus.

It's all about Jesus.

It's all about you.

It's not about you, by the way.

I mean, he loves you a lot, but it's all about him.

It's about him.

It's about him.

I remember when this happened in my life and had already been to Bible school.

I already had my Bible degree.

I was already serving in church.

And all of a sudden, I realized, the Bible isn't about me at all.

The Bible is all about Jesus.

The message of Christianity is all about Jesus.

How much do you talk about him?

It's all Peter could talk about.

And after Cornelius heard it, that's all Cornelius could talk about too, I'm sure.

Tell people about him.

He's the message.

He's the one you're to believe in.

Believe in Jesus because Jesus is the one who forgives sins.

If someone asks you, what do you believe?

You don't have to give them a 20-minute theological lecture like I'm doing right now.

You don't have to do that.

Here's what you have to believe.

Here it is.

Everything I've preached, this is what I'm right now today.

This is it.

This is what Peter preached to Cornelius and it's what we as Christians are supposed to believe.

I believe anyone can be saved or God can save anyone.

I believe Jesus is Lord.

I believe everyone will stand before him someday and I believe everyone who puts their faith in Jesus can be forgiven.

That's the message.

That's Christianity.

I hope this isn't too boring for you, feeling like you're, you know, in Bible school or something.

But this is the message.

Not you getting a bigger house.

And maybe God wants to do that for you, but it's not the message.

That's the message.

Jesus came.

Jesus lived.

Jesus lived.

Jesus died for our sins.

Jesus rose again.

Jesus is God.

Jesus is Lord.

Jesus is coming to judge the living and the dead.

And everyone who puts their faith in him

can be forgiven.

That's the message Peter preached.

That's the message Cornelius and his whole household heard.

And then what happened?

Don't miss it.

I didn't put it on the screen.

I should have.

While Peter was speaking, the Holy Spirit fell.

And this is what they said.

For they heard them.

speaking in tongues just like they had in Acts chapter 2.

They go, well, who can forbid them being water baptized?

They've already been spiritually baptized.

Who are we to stand in the face against God?

In a world full of voices, there is one message that

In a world full of competing gods, there is one Lord.

In a world full of confusion, there is one Savior.

And when you see him, he'll stand out among the chaos and you will see clearly Jesus is.

Jesus, we honor you today.

You're it.

You're God.

And today, we honor you in this message because you are the message.

You are everything our heart longs for.

In the midst of cultural confusion, in the midst of

of a where's Waldo generation, you stand out among them all.

And now that I've seen you, everything fades in your presence.

Nothing will ever satisfy us again but you.

Help us to live lives

that honor your name.

Help us to be clear-minded like Peter was.

I see clearly.

Help us to see clearly in a confused culture.

It's all about you, always has been.

We honor you this very day.

Thank you that God can save anyone.

With every head bowed and every eye closed, if you are sitting in this room or in Pendleton, I'm gonna ask our campus director to come up on the platform right now in Pendleton.

If you're in these rooms right now and you say, Bob, I am not sure I'm right with God.

If I were to stand before him today, I do not know

if I'm saved.

You are one sincere prayer of repentance away from getting your life right with God.

God can save anyone, even you.

And if that's you and you would say, Bob, I want to get my life right with him.

Between you, me, and the Lord, I want to know who wants to pray this prayer with us.

And if that's you, would you just look up and catch eyes with us by raising your hand so we can see.

I want to pray that next prayer with you right now.
